Richard Jay Belzer was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1944. He worked as a reporter for the Bridgeport Post in the late 1960s and dreamt of one day becoming an acclaimed writer.

He is survived by his third wife, actress Harlee McBride, who made multiple appearances as medical examiner Dr. Alyssa Dyer on “Homicide: Life on the Street”; as well as two stepdaughters.
