Birth & Early Life
Uday Pratap Saharan was born on 8 December 2004 in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan. Uday’s father Sanjeev Saharan hoped Uday would become a cricketer because that was his own unfulfilled dream when he was younger. His father ran a cricket coaching place and took Uday there to practice.
He also made space at home for Uday to play cricket, where Uday started learning the game. It would get very cold in winter in Sri Ganganagar, down to 1 degree, but Uday always went to practice no matter how cold it was. Encouraged by his father, 11-year-old Uday moved from Sri Ganganagar to Fazilka seeking better cricket opportunities.
He played on the under-14 and under-16 teams there. Later, he moved again to Bathinda to join the under-19 team which had very good cricket facilities from the Punjab Cricket Association to help Uday improve at cricket.
Uday and his dad travelled daily to Bathinda. After a year, Uday made the Punjab under-14 team camp, so his dad drove him to Mohali where he would stay without family for the first time. Right after dropping Uday off and reaching Ludhiana, his dad got a call from Uday wanting to come home.
For a week his dad put off picking him up, and gradually Uday started enjoying the camp. The Punjab team captain, Mandeep Singh, was impressed by Uday and gifted him a cricket bat after he did well in a fitness test.
Career
In 2022, Uday was a backup player for the Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies but did not get to play. After returning, he understood he needed to improve his cricket skills. He got home at 11 pm but was ready to go to practice again by 6 am the next day.
In 2022, Uday captained the Indian team in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup where they reached the semifinals. After strong performances, scoring 297 runs across 5 games at an average of 99, Uday became captain of the Under-19 Indian cricket team.
In practice matches before the 2023 Under-19 World Cup, Uday scored 74 runs against Australia and another 50 not out against Sri Lanka. In India’s first match on January 20th 2023 against Bangladesh, India scored 251 runs with Uday scoring 64 runs off 94 balls. His teammate Adarsh Singh top scored with 76.
On 2 February 2024, before the semifinals against Nepal, Uday scored 100 runs off 107 balls with 9 boundaries. Uday and teammate Sachin Dhas set a record 215-run partnership in just 202 balls. In the semifinals on 7 February against South Africa, Uday scored 81 runs from 124 balls with 6 sixes.
