Upadhye was lawyer in Bombay High Court and also well-known union leader of labour/industrial while his mother Sadhana Upadhye was a professor of Marathi literature and Philosophy. Nitish did his schooling at Gokhle Education Society’s DGT High School and Robert Money School, Proctor Road of Mumbai, and graduated from Mumbai Veterinary College and Wilson College. Nitish holds a Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry degree. He was an adjunct veterinarian at the Mumbai Racetrack.

Career
Bharadwaj began his career with the film Trishagni with Nana Patekar in the year 1988. He starred in the Malayalam film Njan Gandharvan in 1991. He featured in the 1992 film Sangeet with Madhuri Dixit. In the same year, he appeared in the movie Gruhpravesh 1992 with Nishigandha Wad. Nitish starred in a prominent role in several Marathi movies like Khatyal Sasu Nathal Soon (1987), Nasheebwan (1988), Anapekshit, and Pasanta Ahe Mulgi (1989).
Nitish debuted on television with the hit serial Mahabharat in 1988 and soon become a household name as Krishna. He received huge appreciation and popularity through the show. This performance led him to play Lord Vishnu and his various incarnations in B.R. Chopra’s another mythological show Vishnu Puran. Later he starred in the TV serial Man Mein Hai Vishwas, Ajab Gajab Ghar Jamai and Ramayan.
