He has always been a bright kid in school and college. Chakrabarty completed his higher secondary from Andrew’s High School, Kolkata in the year 1975. He did his graduation in Bachelor of Science (BSc) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi. He also cleared his AMI examination while he has stayed in Delhi (1978).

Career
Chakrabarty has acted in various Hindi movies and started his acting journey with Charbak theatre group in 1983. He started his career as a lead actor in the TV series Tero Parbon, aired on Kolkata Doordarshan in 1987. His movie debut was with the movie Antardhan,1992. He has also done direction for some shows. He has acted in Ek Tukro Chand, Gosaipur Sargaram, Joto Kando Kathmandutte, Jahangirer Swarnmudra, Dr.Munshir Diary, Royal Bengal Rahasya, SOS, Kolkatay Kohinoor etc.
